This is one of the most different and complex protagonists I've read in a long time. Carol Sabala is a woman who lives a dual existence. Driven by emotions and haunted by insecurities, she lives much in her own head. Yet on the flip side, Carol is analytical of her surroundings and the people she loves, constantly weighing and analyzing the what, how, and why, as if that will somehow give her peace. She is complicated, real, likeable but unfathomable, and you are drawn into her life and her ways with each turn of the page. Her life partner, David, is just as complicated and well-written. They are well matched. The author manages to create multifaceted characters while keeping the pace of the mystery going, not an easy feat. Reminding me at times of Cara Black's Aimee Leduc, I found myself pulled into the world of Santa Cruz, much the same as I came to know the intimacies of Paris with Aimee. And I found myself enjoying Carol Sabala as I would a fine, complex red wine. I will be reading more of Vinnie Hansen's work. She writes a very satisfying story.Product details

Wine and Bullets is my favorite Carol Sabala mystery to date. In this installment, Carol is pulled into a web of entangled egos in the art world of her costal California hometown. A well-known local artist whose work is on display at the gallery where Carol's photography partner, David Shapiro, is hoping to get a showing is killed at the novel's start. David finds a way to set Carol up for taking on the case because he wants to see Carol make her mark on the community and make a breakthrough in her career. Though resistant at first, in the end, Sabala takes on the case. She drives around the county gathering information and pursuing clues, occasionally accompanied by David. The search leads her into the convoluted inner politics and workings of the art world involving jealousy, ambition, and the desire for recognition where Carol has to negotiate a variety of new and challenging situations.
I enjoyed watching Carol's sense of herself as a detective grow as she stretched her comfort level in this novel. Though Ms. Sabala is nervous about some of the artists she interviews in trying to solve the case, she has enough pluck to follow through with her plans, and she pays attention to what her intuition tells her as well as her reason. Hansen did a good job of building the tension in the scenes where Ms. Sabala breaks into the art gallery where the murder occurred. I felt I was there in the room with Carol, as she crept through the dark, looking for clues.
I especially appreciate the way Hansen weaves the character of the gorilla graffiti artist who paints unusual messages on signs around town into the plot. Noticing this character's art at various locations around town influences the way Carol gradually makes connections to the central mystery she is trying to resolve. The graffiti artist's motivations interested me. His art is important to him, but for different reasons than the other artists in the novel, and his character motivations adds a complexity to the plot that I found engaging.
The mystery's climax is unusual, and dramatic. The final scene where Sabala encounters the graffiti artist in his every day environment is especially well-written, and is my favorite scene in the book because of what Hansen choses not to tell. Ms. Sabala demonstrates subtlety and insightful understanding of character in her response to the graffiti artist, and trusts herself to know what to do and say. My appreciation for both the detective, and for Hansen's ability to demonstrate her detective's growing inner sense of herself expanded as I completed the novel's final pages.
This was an enjoyable mystery. I look forward to the next book in Hansen's Carol Sabala series, and hope to see more of how Sabala's skill and inner confidence continue to develop as she takes on new adventures.
The head of the Cultural Council in Santa Cruz tells Carol, a baker trying to get her chops as a PI, "I do consider a perfect croissant a work of art. Anything done to perfection is a work of art." By that definition, "Art Wine & Bullets" is a work of art. It's a perfect mix of clues, danger, and crime seen through the eyes of quirky Carol Sabala and Art Gorilla, a young man making statements and leaving clues via his graffiti.
